Carpet Exhibition We Love Estonia – a new display that highlights the work of three artists
2 February 2018 – 22 February 2018
Endla Theatre, Sammassaal Hall (Keskväljak 1, Pärnu, Estonia)
Valley Carpet Factory is happy to present We Love Estonia, a carpet exhibition that opens in the Endla Theatre’s Sammassaal Hall on Friday, 2 February, remaining open until 22 February. Opening ceremony takes place at 5 pm on 2 February.
Three artists – Ruth Vassel, Heleri Alexandra Sits-Tamme, and Kaire Rohtla – have dedicated their artwork to Estonian subject matter. In addition to new commissions created especially for the event, the exhibition includes collections, which have represented Valley Carpet Factory at international trade fairs.
The themes of the display range from traditions to cosmic ideas with a nod to current events. Frequent bird motifs allude to Soul Bird (hingelind), an influential symbol in Estonian folklore since the times of Finno-Ugric tribes. Mini-collections, once displayed at trade fairs, embrace spiritual issues: Fragments of a Journey uses symbols to tell the story of Estonians while embodying the Tree of Life (Elupuu); the concept behind the Departure is a new beginning. The Departure invites the viewer to look to the future, improve their inner world, and reflect on old burdens to be left in the past in order to begin again with a clean slate.
Valley Carpet Factory is an Estonian company that has produced hand-tufted rugs and carpets since 1996. Production focuses mainly on handcrafted rugs and carpets made from natural materials, making each carpet unique. The majority of Valley's select production is exported to Scandinavia and Western Europe; therefore, the purpose of the exhibition in Pärnu is to introduce local hand-tufted masterpieces to Estonians.
